Bihar’s Political Landscape: A Dance of Alliances and Ambitions
In the intricate dance of Bihar’s political arena, a recent phone call from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stirred speculation about a potential shift in alliances. However, the attempts to establish contact with Nitish Kumar were reportedly unsuccessful, leaving the Congress in uncertainty.
Against this backdrop, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh asserted that they had actively sought multiple conversations with Nitish Kumar. He emphasized that the Congress had made repeated efforts to engage with the Chief Minister, but due to Nitish Kumar’s busy schedule, effective communication proved challenging.
Amidst the swirling political drama, speculations are rife about Nitish Kumar once again navigating the corridors of power in Bihar. This would mark his fourth term in the Chief Minister’s office, a remarkable feat in the ever-shifting landscape of Bihar politics.
Adding an intriguing layer to the unfolding narrative is the possibility of BJP leader Sushil Modi becoming the Deputy Chief Minister. Sushil Modi, known for his steadfast loyalty to Nitish Kumar, could play a crucial role in shaping Bihar’s political future. The formal announcement of this alliance is expected after a meeting of JDU MLAs on Monday, where Sushil Modi’s role as the Deputy Chief Minister may be finalized.
In the quest for stability in Bihar’s ‘Mahagathbandhan’ government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reportedly become more proactive. According to Congress sources, Rahul Gandhi has engaged in discussions with former Chief Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi. The outreach indicates a concerted effort by Congress to strengthen their ties with regional leaders, potentially reshaping alliances in the state.
In a strategic move, Lalu Prasad Yadav, the leader of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has endorsed Jitan Ram Manjhi’s son, Santosh Kumar Suman, as the Deputy Chief Ministerial candidate. This development could further solidify the Mahagathbandhan, as Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD holds considerable sway with its 79 MLAs in the Bihar Assembly.
The magic number for a majority in the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly stands at 122. Currently, the RJD has 79 MLAs, Congress has 19, Left parties have 12, CPI(M) has 2, CPI has 1, and one independent MLA supports the Mahagathbandhan. In contrast, BJP holds 78 seats, and JDU has 45.
To secure a comfortable majority, Lalu Prasad Yadav needs the support of only two more MLAs. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Asaduddin Owaisi, the AIMIM leader from Hyderabad, has emerged as a potential ally. If the four Jitan Ram Manjhi-aligned MLAs and Owaisi’s support materialize, the Mahagathbandhan could reach the coveted 122 seats, potentially sidelining the BJP-JDU alliance.
In the high-stakes game of Bihar politics, every move holds significance. The dynamics between key players like Nitish Kumar, Sushil Modi, Rahul Gandhi, and Lalu Prasad Yadav are crucial in shaping the state’s political future. As the curtain rises on another chapter in Bihar’s political saga, the alliances and ambitions of its leaders continue to unfold, leaving the state on the precipice of a potential political transformation.
