News Desk, Kolkata : The BJP leader from Delhi has increased his visits to West Bengal in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Amit Shah, much like his political counterpart JP Nadda, has frequented West Bengal multiple times in the past few months. Even before the target of 35 seats was set by Amit Shah, he has been actively involved in the state’s political landscape. According to BJP sources, the party is considering Amit Shah as a potential candidate to contest in the Lok Sabha elections from West Bengal.
In October last year, Amit Shah visited Kolkata for the inauguration of the Ram Mandir at Lebutala Park during Durga Puja. Subsequently, on November 29, he addressed a gathering at the Dharmatala Dorina Crossing. Skipping the usual month-end break, Shah returned to Kolkata on the night of December 25. During his visit, he held meetings with party leaders and workers. While there were speculations about his trip to West Bengal on January 28, the visit got canceled at the last moment due to the political situation in Bihar.
Sources within the BJP suggest that Amit Shah’s frequent visits are strategic, aiming to strengthen the party’s position in West Bengal ahead of the elections. Drawing parallels with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who shifted from Gujarat to contest and win from Varanasi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP insiders believe a similar approach could be successful in West Bengal.
In 2014, Narendra Modi contested and won from Varanasi, breaking away from his home state Gujarat. Later, he relinquished the Varanasi seat. In the same year, BJP secured 71 seats in Uttar Pradesh, a significant improvement from the mere 9 seats won in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP sources indicate that they are inspired by the success in Uttar Pradesh and are hopeful of achieving similar results in West Bengal.
Adding to the narrative, the inauguration of the Ram Mandir and the subsequent rise of the BJP in North India, including Gobalpura, has emboldened the party’s leaders. This has fueled the desire to make significant inroads in the southern states as well. With this objective in mind, BJP leaders are contemplating the possibility of Narendra Modi contesting from a constituency in South India, possibly near Varanasi.
The BJP is looking to break the traditional stronghold of regional parties in West Bengal and make a considerable impact in the upcoming elections. The party’s leaders are actively strategizing and considering all possibilities, including the potential candidature of Amit Shah in West Bengal. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the BJP is determined to expand its footprint beyond its strongholds, setting the stage for a compelling and dynamic Lok Sabha election in West Bengal.
In conclusion, Amit Shah’s frequent visits to West Bengal signal the BJP’s earnest efforts to make significant inroads into the state’s political landscape. With the potential plan of Shah contesting from West Bengal in the Lok Sabha elections and the strategic comparisons with Modi’s previous electoral move, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to bolster its position in the eastern state. As political dynamics continue to evolve, the coming months will unfold the extent of BJP’s influence and whether the gamble of contesting from West Bengal pays off for Amit Shah.
