News Desk, Kolkata :  In a sweeping change within the state police force, a major reshuffle has taken place, particularly in the position of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP). Monoj Barma has been appointed to this crucial role, succeeding Javed Shamim, who is now transferred to the Detective Department and ADGP (Security) positions. Simultaneously, three police districts in the northern 24 Parganas region – Basirhat, Bongaon, and Barasat – have witnessed significant personnel changes.

At the outset of the month, the Basirhat Police District found itself thrust into the limelight due to an attack on top-ranking officials by unidentified assailants. The incident remains shrouded in mystery, with the primary suspect, Shahjahan Sheikh, still at large. The police’s search operation at his residence in connection with a corruption case led to a confrontation with the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), resulting in tensions between the two law enforcement entities. This incident is believed to have precipitated the recent reshuffle.

Hossein Mehdi Rahman has now assumed the role of Superintendent of Police in Basirhat, succeeding Jobby Thomas. Rahman, with a background in the State Crime Investigation Department (CID), has previously served as a Superintendent of Police. Thomas, in turn, has been transferred to the superintending role in Islampur. According to police sources, these changes are part of routine transfers and are not directly linked to the Basirhat incident.

In Bongaon Police District, Deenesh Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Central), has been appointed as the Superintendent of Police. This move follows the relocation of Joyita Basu, the former SP of Bongaon, to the role of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in Darjeeling Range. Similarly, the Superintendent of Police in Barasat, Joyita Basu, has been reassigned as the DIG in the Maldah Range.

The shuffle also extends to South Bengal, where Siddh nath Gupta, previously holding the position of ADG , has been replaced by Rajesh Kumar in the State Crime Records Bureau. Meanwhile, Siddh Nath Gupta is appointed as the ADG (IGP) in South Bengal.

With the upcoming Lok Sabha elections looming, this restructuring within the state police force adds an interesting layer to the political landscape. However, it’s crucial to note that the recent spate of transfers, affecting 45 IPS officers, occurred just a month ago, showcasing the continuous dynamics within the police administration.

In a recent update, the Wednesday reshuffle saw 45 IPS officers being transferred across various key positions. Uttara Pandey, former Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police (North), has been moved to the CID as DIG (IGP), marking a significant change in her career trajectory. Tarun Haldar, a young officer previously holding the role of DC Traffic North, has been elevated to the position of DC (Traffic) in the South-Eastern part of the city.

Simultaneously, Shubhankar Bhattacharya, formerly the DC (Traffic) in South-Eastern Bengaluru, has been appointed as the Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Kolkata Police. His transfer adds an interesting dimension to the force, bringing in a seasoned officer with experience in a different urban landscape.

As the Deputy Commissioner of Bidhannagar Police, Indira Mukherjee, moves on to take charge as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Darjeeling Range, the reshuffling reveals a strategic placement of officers ahead of the crucial electoral season. The Traffic Police in Kolkata witnesses a shift with Indira Mukherjee taking over as the DC Traffic (North), indicating a continuous effort to streamline and optimize the force’s capabilities.

In the broader context, these transfers represent routine administrative changes. However, against the backdrop of recent events and with the elections on the horizon, the realignment within the police force takes on added significance, reflecting the state’s proactive approach in ensuring effective law enforcement and security. As the chessboard of key positions is rearranged, the state police force prepares for the intricate dance of maintaining order and security in the run-up to the elections.
