News Desk, Kolkata : The BJP in the state has formed the final committee for conducting the Lok Sabha elections. While there was much speculation about who would head the election management committee of the BJP, the state BJP couldn’t reach a decision. Earlier, 35 divisions were created in a committee of 101 members. Despite finalizing the names of the heads of all those committees, the state BJP couldn’t decide who would be the chairman of the election management committee, leading to internal debates and conflicts within the party.
Eventually, another committee was formed above the existing one, with the state president Sukanta Majumdar at its helm. A meeting was held on Saturday at the state office in Salt Lake, where the top leadership discussed and formed this committee. Interestingly, this committee seems to focus more on maintaining balance and harmony from all sides rather than showcasing any prominent figures.
In this committee, after Sukanta Majumdar, the names include opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari, followed by former Union Minister Subhash Sarkar, Nishith Pramanik, Shantanu Thakur, and Jan Barla. Dilip Ghosh, who held a significant position in the state and later became a central minister, is also part of the committee. Presently, there is no specific responsibility for him in either the state or at the national level, as he is currently the Member of Parliament from Medinipur.
Observing his recent activities, it seems Dilip Ghosh is not interested in taking charge of any other area beyond his constituency. However, the state BJP wants to give importance to Dilip Ghosh even in the Lok Sabha elections, suggesting his involvement in the election management committee. Besides Dilip, another former state assembly speaker, Rahul Singh, has secured a place in the committee.
Among the 20 members of this committee, the five general secretaries of the state are Loket Chatterjee, Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, Agnimitra Paul, Deepak Burman, and Jagannath Chatterjee. Additionally, there are general secretary (organization) Amitabh Chakraborty and joint general secretary (organization) Satis Dhand.
While Sukanta, Dilip, and Rahul secured positions in various committees, it is noticeable that the women’s wing state president Falguni Patra holds a significant position in the state BJP election management committee. However, having a woman representative in crucial committees is a customary practice in the BJP across all states.
According to BJP sources, Jagannath primarily functions as the state leader for election management responsibilities. The major role will be played by Amitabh and Dhand. The rest will handle organizational decisions and strategies. Besides, four central leaders from Bengal are playing key roles in the committee: observer Mangal Pandey, co-observers Amit Malviya and Asha Lakhda, and special invitee Sunil Bansal.
BJP sources suggest that Sunil Bansal, the national general secretary and in-charge of organizational elections, is entrusted with overseeing the youth wing’s work across the country. In addition to Bengal, he is also handling Odisha and Telangana. In these three states, Sunil Bansal, who is known for his organizational skills, is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the BJP’s electoral strength.
This committee structure signals that Sunil Bansal will be the powerhouse for the state BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Besides Bengal, he will also be the chief representative of the party in the national leadership, especially focusing on organizational aspects in the run-up to the elections.
In conclusion, with a carefully crafted committee structure, the state BJP aims for a well-balanced approach, ensuring representation from various sections and maintaining harmony. The inclusion of seasoned leaders and strategists indicates a comprehensive and organized approach to the Lok Sabha elections, with an emphasis on both state and national levels.
