
NIN Web Desk : (Dr Subhrajyoti Chattopadhyay); Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare condition that causes muscle weakness, tingling, and loss of sensation in the limbs. It can also cause difficulty breathing and swallowing.GBS is often triggered by a recent upper respiratory tract infection or gastrointestinal infection. The bacteria Campylobacter jejuni, which causes diarrhea, is one of the most common triggers.
Primary features :
- Muscle weakness: Weakness usually starts in the legs and spreads to the arms and head. It can also start in the arms, face, or eyes.
2. Tingling: Tingling or a pins and needles feeling in the hands and feet Pain: Pain can be severe, especially at night. It can feel achy, shooting, or cramplike.
3. Difficulty breathing: Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing on exertion
4.Difficulty swallowing: Difficulty swallowing, speaking, or chewing Coordination problems: Unsteady walk or difficulty climbing stairs
5. Eye problems: Difficulty with eye muscles and vision, or double vision Bladder and bowel problems: Trouble with bladder control or bowel function, or constipation.
6. Heart rate and blood pressure: Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure, or low or high blood pressure.

GBS is a medical emergency that requires immediate hospitalization. There is no cure, but treatment can help you recover faster. Some drugs against the causative agents, immunoglobulin, immediate admission, if needed ventilation etc may save the life. Don’t panic rather be aware.
