Aiming to utilize the 470-582 megahertz spectrum, the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Apurva Chandra, unveiled the plan during a recent conference. He highlighted that users opting for D2M technology to watch videos could potentially alleviate the pressure on 5G networks by 25-30%. This not only promises seamless video streaming but also accelerates India’s digital transformation.
Chandra revealed that pilot projects were successfully conducted in Bengaluru, New Delhi’s Knowledge Path, and Noida last year. The trials demonstrated the efficiency of D2M technology, paving the way for its nationwide implementation. Notably, Chandra emphasized that out of the 28 crore households in the country, a staggering 8-9 crore lack access to television. D2M technology is poised to bridge this gap, bringing video content to these households.
With a smartphone in the hands of 80 crore people in the country, the significance of video content cannot be overstated. An astonishing 69% of smartphone users engage with video content regularly. However, this surge in video consumption exerts additional stress on mobile networks, leading to buffering issues. D2M technology emerges as the solution to this problem, promising to eliminate buffering and provide uninterrupted video streaming experiences.
Developed by Sankhya Labs and IIT Kanpur, this technology leverages the telecommunication infrastructure and utilizes public broadcaster spectrums to transmit video, audio, and data signals directly to mobile and smart devices. Remarkably, it is projected to transmit signals to over 100 crore mobile devices seamlessly. This not only ensures a smooth video streaming experience but also significantly reduces the cost of data transmission.
