News Desk, Kolkata :  In a surprising turn of events, ‘Chief Justice T.S. Shivaganam’ of the Calcutta High Court addressed the ongoing clash between two judges, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Single Bench and Justice Soumen Sen of the Division Bench. Chief Justice Shivaganam’ expressed deep regret and embarrassment over the incident, acknowledging that such a situation was unexpected in the historical halls of the High Court. He emphasized that efforts are underway to swiftly resolve the matter, ensuring that the dignity of the court is upheld.

The conflict between Justices Gangopadhyay and Sen arose in the context of a medical admission case, which has now been temporarily shifted out of the High Court. The Chief Justice shared that the Supreme Court has intervened, taking suo-motu cognizance of the issue and directing an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This step reflects the gravity of the situation and the need for an impartial investigation.

Highlighting the complexity of the matter, Chief Justice Shivaganam’ underlined that the situation is not in line with the esteemed traditions of the High Court. He reassured the public that every possible effort is being made to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy. He added, “This is the historical High Court of our country, and this unfortunate situation is affecting the lives of many ordinary citizens. We are making all kinds of efforts to address this issue, and I hope the situation returns to normal.”

The medical admission case, which led to the clash between the two judges, witnessed a twist when Justice Gangopadhyay, presiding over the Division Bench, set aside the directions given by Justice Sen regarding the CBI inquiry. Subsequently, Justice Sen raised multiple allegations against Justice Gangopadhyay, citing ‘errors’ in the Division Bench’s directives. In response, ‘Chief Justice Shivaganam’ emphasized the need for a fair investigation and stated that the Supreme Court is closely monitoring the situation.

In a proactive move, the Supreme Court constituted a special bench, led by Chief Justice Chandrachud, to hear the case. This bench, comprising five members, convened on a Saturday, an unusual occurrence highlighting the urgency and significance of the matter. The court ordered all parties involved to submit affidavits, marking a crucial step in the upcoming hearing scheduled three weeks later in the Supreme Court.

The ongoing feud has not only disrupted the judicial proceedings but has also prompted introspection within the legal fraternity. Chief Justice urged for a resolution, recognizing the impact such internal conflicts can have on the public’s perception of the judiciary. He stated, “We are taking all necessary steps to address this problem and hope that the situation normalizes.”
