NIN Web Desk : (Dr subhrojyoti chattopadhyay); The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025 was passed by the Lok Sabha after midnight on Wednesday after 13 hours of continuous debate and voting. Hon’ble President Draupadi Murmu signed it after it was passed by both houses of Parliament. The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025 became law, the Center claimed. Opponents, including the Congress and the Trinamool, alleged that the law would undermine the powers of the Waqf Board and take away the Muslim rights.
On Tuesday afternoon, Umarpur National Highway No. 12 of Raghunathganj police station became a virtual battleground. The protesters blocked the national highway for almost an hour and shouted slogans. However, when the blockade was lifted, a riot started with the police. Initially, the police requested the protesters to lift the blockade but they did not budge. Later, when the police tried to forcibly lift the blockade, the situation became heated and the police car was vandalized even a few police personnel were injured in the incident. The police were pelted with bricks and stones after which the police baton-charged the protesters. The police even had to use tear gas to bring the situation under control.
“Some organisations had called for protest rallies and blocked a national highway. When police tried to lift the blockade the incident took place. However, now police are patrolling the area and the situation is under control,” said Rajarshi Mitra, district magistrate, Murshidabad. The Administration issued section 144 (new law section 163 BNSS) in the entire area of Raghunathganj police station and Suti police station. As per the notice this directive will be in force for the next 48 hours.
