NIN Web Desk : (Dr subhrojyoti chattopadhyay); A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Argentina’s Drake Passage, located 136 miles south of Ushuaia, on Friday at 9 am local time. In response to the earthquake, Chile has issued a tsunami warning for its southern region. Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) has advised evacuations along the coastal area of the Magallanes region, which is located at the southern tip of the country, due to the potential risk of a tsunami.

Following the alert, Chilean President Gabriel Boric posted on X, urging for the evacuation of coastal areas in the Magallanes region. The tsunami warning also extends to nearby Antarctic areas. The earthquake, with a depth of 6.21 miles, set off a tsunami alert, urging residents in southern Argentina and Chile’s coastal regions to move to higher ground to avoid dangerous waves. The tsunami alert affects areas within 186 miles of the quake’s epicenter.

The Drake Passage lies between Cape Horn, Chile, Argentina, and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. Authorities have advised residents to move to higher ground. Tsunami warning sirens have begun sounding in the affected areas. There have been no reports of casualties so far. Earlier, on May 1, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake had also hit Argentina.
