The towering multi-story collapses like a house of cards, on the way there’s only picture of destruction. In the meantime, tremors were felt again. On Friday around midnight local time, an earthquake shook a large area of Myanmar again. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam also felt Tremors due to its influence. The night earthquake caused more panic and chaos among people. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) posted on the X handle that another earthquake hit Myanmar at near Midnight on Friday. The magnitude of the Earthquake was 4.2 on the Richter scale. (Latitude 22.15 North, Longitude 95.41 East) the epicenter of the earthquake was 10 km deep in the ground.
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay on Friday afternoon. Thailand, Vietnam, even parts of India especially North East and West Bengal felt tremors. The houses practically started swaying in a pendulum motion. Street light poles also started swaying like palm trees, most of the people came out of their houses in panic. The tremors were so strong that several buildings from the hotel shook even in Thailand, about 1500 km away. A multi-storey building collapsed, from the swimming pool on top of the highrise building, the water overflowed somewhere! At least 144 people are feared to have died after the demolition of a religious place of worship in Myanmar, according to the country’s administration.
According to the International Seismological Center, about 140 earthquakes of magnitude greater than or equal to 3.0 occurred in and around Myanmar each year from 1990 to 2019. Thus, it is clear that the long coastal areas of Myanmar remain vulnerable areas to Earthquakes. Emergency has been declared in Myanmar after the Higher Officials held a meeting. Many people have already gone missing in this Earthquake, though Rescue Operation Team has already started their work.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar today said that India has sent 15 tonnes of relief material, including solar lamps, food packets etc to Myanmar on an IAF C 130 J aircraft. Amid Donald Trump’s announcement of cuts to USAID, the US President vowed to send assistance to earthquake-hit Myanmar. The budget cuts have stalled humanitarian work worldwide, USAID has historically played a key role in disaster relief efforts.
