NIN Web Desk : (Dr subhrojyoti chattopadhyay); Referring to India’s seven northeastern states as landlocked, Mohammad Yunus, the chief adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, called on China to extend financial support. Yunus went on a four-day visit to China, a video of his visit has spread on social media. Where Yunus is heard encouraging the Chinese government to create a financial base in Bangladesh. In this regard, he also referred to Dhaka as “the only guardian of the sea in this region”. Yunus said, “The seven states in the eastern part of India, called the Seven Sisters… are landlocked countries, landlocked regions of India. They have no access to the sea, we are the only Guardian of the sea in this region. So it opens the door to a huge potential which can expand the Chinese economy. Make things, produce things, market things, bring things to China, bring things to the world.”
Sharing the video on X handle, Sanjeev Sanyal, member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Financial Advisory Council wrote, “What is interesting is that Yunus while making an open appeal to China is presenting 7 states of India as landlocked. China is welcome to invest in Bangladesh, but what exactly is the significance of 7 states of India being landlocked?” Yunus, who met Xi Jinping during his four-day visit to China, also sought a 50-year master plan for river water management from Beijing. This includes the Teesta River in the upstream region of India, Yunus accordingly said, “We are here to learn from you. We want to know how we can make water essential to people.”
Meanwhile, Bangladesh and China have held positive talks on signing an implementation plan of the MoU on the exchange of hydropower information on the Yarlung Zangbo-Yamuna River, which originates in China and flows through a significant portion of Indian territory to Bangladesh. Both countries also agreed to enhance maritime cooperation and plan to hold a new round of maritime cooperation in due course. As per reports Bangladesh welcomes Chinese companies to participate in the modernization and expansion of Mongla port facilities and is ready to cooperate with China to further develop the China Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Chittagong.
