News Desk, Rakesh chakraborty (Hooghly) : In a dramatic turn of events, the main accused in the Rishra shooting incident has been apprehended in Bihar, two weeks after the incident occurred on January 1. Deepak Joyswal (25), a gunshot victim undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital, was arrested in Bihar.
The unsettling incident unfolded behind the Rishra Municipal Corporation’s Ward 7 playground, near the Gonsai Bagan area, on the evening of January 18. Deepak, who was in front of his house at the time, fell victim to a hail of bullets. Five or six assailants, with their faces concealed, approached him and fired three rounds from close range before fleeing. Deepak was initially rescued and taken to ‘Shrirampur Walls Hospital’ and later referred to SSKM Hospital, where he is currently under medical care.
Present at the crime scene were Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) from Chandannagar Police and officers from the Rishra Police Station. Additionally, Chandannagar Police Commissioner Amit P. Javalgi was present to oversee the situation.
The initial suspicion was that the incident stemmed from an old rivalry, a theory supported by the police. As the investigation progressed, it was discovered that Deepak had a history of criminal activities. In 2022, he was accused in a murder case in the jail itself, and later he relocated to Risar, working with a group in the area.
Deepak’s desire to vacate the rented house led to friction with his landlord, resulting in a plan to teach him a lesson. The attackers, including Surya, Jai, and a few others, harbored longstanding animosity towards Deepak. The infamous criminal, Paddum Sao, who was infamous for orchestrating shootings, was hired for the job.
Digging deeper into Paddum Sao past, it was revealed that he had faced accusations in a murder case in Risar in 2007 and was also implicated in a dacoity case in Kolkata’s BaraBazar in 2013. However, he had managed to evade arrest until now.
Despite residing on 21 N.S. Road in Rishra, Paddum primarily operated in Lakhsmimpur, Bihar, where the police struggled to apprehend him previously. The police finally succeeded in arresting him based on information from his associates.
In a press conference at Risar Police Station on Thursday, Arnav Biswas, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shrirampur), stated that the police had interrogated Deepak, aiming to gather more details about his criminal activities and associates. The arrest of Paddum Sao, the alleged mastermind, is also a significant breakthrough.
This recent development sheds light on the complexities of criminal activities and rivalries that transcend state boundaries. Deepak’s criminal past, coupled with his relocation and involvement with a notorious group, underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing organized crime.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to unravel the network of criminals involved in the Rishra shooting. The narrative serves as a reminder of the intricate web of criminality that law enforcement must navigate to maintain peace and order in society.
