Shreela Majumdar, the beloved actress, has left a void in Tollywood with the news of her demise. She breathed her last at the age of 65 after battling cancer at a Kolkata hospital for the past three years. Shreela bid farewell to this world on Saturday, finding eternal rest in the crematorium.
From January 13 to 20, Shreela was admitted to Tata Medical Cancer Center. Later, she was brought home, revealed her husband, SNM Abdi. In November last year, her health took a downturn, prompting her return from London, where her son Sohel Abdi resides. Sohel rushed back to be with his mother during this challenging time.
The last time audiences saw Shreela on screen was in Koushik Ganguly’s film ‘Palon.’ However, her final public appearance was at an event in Alipore last year, organized by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Shreela made her mark in the film industry in 1980 with Mridul Sen’s movie ‘Parashuram,’ when she was just 16 years old. Recognizing her talent from stage performances, Mridul chose her as the lead actress for the film. Following that, she starred in notable films such as ‘Ek Din Pratidin,’ ‘Akaler Sandhane,’ and ‘Kharji.’
Working under Shyam Benegal’s direction, she featured in films like ‘Arjun’ and ‘Mandi.’ In RItuparno Ghosh’s ‘Chokher Bali,’ she lent her voice as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s dubbing artist. Shreela also ventured into theatre, leaving a lasting impact with her performances. Her role in Satyajit Ray’s play ‘Nahabat’ received acclaim.
Her versatility extended to commercial cinema as well, where her acting received praise. In Anjan Choudhury’s ‘Puja,’ she showcased her acting prowess. Similarly, in Harnath Chakraborty’s ‘Pratibad,’ Shreela’s performance was memorable. These two films resonated well with audiences across rural Bengal.
Shreela’s journey in the film industry, marked by commendable performances, reached every corner of rural Bengal through these films. However, recent times saw a reduction in her on-screen presence due to health concerns. Despite being a skilled and professional actress, many felt that Shreela wasn’t utilized to her full potential.
She was known for her calm and composed demeanor, seldom speaking more than necessary. Even in this chilly January, Shreela left this world silently, leaving everyone in mourning. The serene actress faced her last curtain call with grace.
